This number is probably best remembered as one of the standout performances from the classic RCA Victor "Artie Shaw at the Blue Room/Cafe Rouge" aircheck set, capturing the 1938-39 Shaw band at its apex. The short "Second Chorus" performance featured here gives us a sense of what the chart sounded like when played by Artie's post-"Frenesi" group. (The little dialogue coda is a reminder that in the film, Fred Astaire and Burgess Meredith were in "The Perennials" - a college band whose students never graduated!)

Amazing device that gives voice to musical instruments. The Sonovox consists of one or two louspeakers placed on the throat that play the source sound. The performer whispers the words while the speakers stand in for the voice box. Used for the talking train in Disney's Dumbo, uncountable radio promos, a tube-in-the-mouth version "Talk Box" was used by Frampton to make his guitar sing, and all-electronic "Vocoder" versions are still used in current pop music.

A clip from Walt Disney's "Fantasia" (which was used again in "Fantasia 2000"). The Sorcerer's Apprentice tells the story of an apprentice who cannot control the magic that he has tried to use, with Mickey Mouse in the role of the apprentice. It was suppose to be Mickey's first appearance in his current design today, but wasn't released till 1940. So Mickey's current design was first seen in a short subject "The Pointer" in 1939.

My favourite scene from this great great classic of cinema history. One of the reasons why I love movies and why I think everyone should love them. The nameless character played by sweet Joan Fontaine explores Manderley and finds Rebecca's old room. There creepy Mrs. Danvers gives her a really bad time showing her all Rebecca's expensive stuff. This movie is just perfect: the actors, the music, the photography, the suspense... Everything is perfect. This scene used to haunt me as a little girl, and I understand now how disturbing it is, with Rebecca's toxic personality filling the air and Mrs. Danvers' obsession tormenting poor Joan Fontaine.

Coney Island, "the place where merriment is king!" Take a trip back in time 50 years before the Mermaid Parade. See masses of old school New Yorkers beat the heat by hitting the beach. See Side Shows! Carnies! Freaks! Thrill rides! Includes the original Coney Island Hot Dog, the Bathing Girl Review, and people getting sick on rides. Not to mention the Tiger Rag, if 1940's Coney Island existed today an insurance agent would have a field day. Still, 1940's Coney Island kicks the ass of most modern amusement parks any day. The Rite of Spring from Disney's Fantasia. Stravinsky's omonimous score was supposed to be about primitive human rituals, but Disney's animators took a completely different inspiration from it and decided to tell the history of Earth up to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The combination of music and animation is perfect. This first part shows the evolution of Earth before the appearance of life. Please comment and rate. Thanks.

A clip from Walt Disney's classic "Fantasia." The first-half of the final classical piece, where the nocturnal Chernabog summons zombies from their graves and empowers restless souls, until driven away by the sound of a church bell.

Donald Duck goes on a kayak trip. When he gets to his campsite, he unloads the kayak, fights with his folding chair, and goes to sleep. Meanwhile, the chipmunks of the forest, attracted by his squawking, make off with the huge pile of food he carelessly unloaded. They get the attention of a bear, who Donald is soon battling.

Talvisota kesti 105 päivää, 30.11.1939 - 13.3.1940. Sota päättyi Moskovan rauhansopimukseen, jossa Suomi luovutti 10 prosenttia maa-alueistaan ja toiseksi suurimman kaupunkinsa, Viipurin, Neuvostoliitolle. Natoliiton etu Suomelle lasketaan näin: (A/100)·B/C A=Venäjän hyökkäystodennäköisyysprosentti B=Tappiot Venäjäsodassa C=Tappiot Natojoukoissa Jos laskun tulos on yli 1, kuuluminen Natoon on Suomen edun mukainen. B on niin paljon suurempi kuin C, että yli nollan oleva A puoltaa Suomen Natojäsenyyttä. Tappioiden lisäksi vaakakupissa on myös itsenäisyyden menetys.

The Nicholas Bros perform the title song in Down Argentine Way. It was the very beginning of their golden years in the early 1940s. To be accurate, it's from 1940 to 1943. During the period, they appeared in six films in Hollywood - Down Argentine Way (1940), Tin Pan Alley (1940), The Great American Broadcast (1941), Sun Valley Serenade (1941), Orchestra Wives (1942) and the legendary Stormy Weather (1943). And this is definitely one of their bests. It's actually equal with the famous 'Jumpin' Jive' routine in Stormy Weather. By this time, the Bros, Fayard and Harold, had already been stars at Cotton Club in Harlem and also appeared in several films, such as Kid Millions (1934), The Big Broadcast Of 1936 (1935), Calling All Stars (1937), etc. They were already fabulous in the '30s. This film, however, tells that in those days the little brothers were, so to speak, only "Padawans". Now they were back on screen as "Jedi Knights"! In the first place, Irving Cummings, director of D.A.W., intended to edit and shorten the Bros' scene, while dance director Nick Castle made a claim for including it in its entirety. A test screening was held, where the audience raised a cheer for the Bros and shouted to the operator in the projection booth to rewind the film and show their dance sequence again (the operator actually did it), which settled the argument. It eventually survived and now you can watch it here. The Nicholas Bros were known as "the Show Stoppers" in the '30s. Nobody could follow them on stage. And they stopped the show literally even on the silver screen! Fayard and Harold appear again at the end of the movie and dance a bit. It also features Carmen Miranda singing 'Mama Yo Quiero' (as well as 'South American Way') which Harold would sing in Reckless Age (1944). You can see the D.A.W. routine enacted on the Colgate Comedy Hour aired on Dec 14, 1952. The Bros performed it also in the film Botta E Risposta (1950) in medley with the 'Jumpin' Jive'. Fayard Nicholas (10/20/1914 - 1/24/2006) is the man on the right. He was kind of a born dancer, a dance-crazy guy of the Astaire type. Watch every movement of his arms, hands and fingers when you see him dancing. Totally beautiful. You can compare it with the movement of Astaire's hands, for instance, in the 'Chanege Partners' number in Carefree (1938). Harold Nicholas (3/27/1921 - 7/3/2000) is on the left. He did singing, dancing, acting, impressions...a very versatile man of the Sammy Davis Jr type. Actually he was Davis' idol. They were the kings. NO ONE could touch them. Tap dancing is not an out-of-date thing, but still an exciting form of dance. One great thing about tap is that you can not only see it, but also HEAR it. Even a blind man could enjoy it. It creates beat, rhythm...which is the most fundamental thing for music. Yes, in the beginning THERE WAS RHYTHM. Hoofers wear tap shoes, just like Jedis wear lightsabers...an elegant weapon of a more civilized time. I call hoofers "Jedis of dance".
